Wally Gacek played Junior A hockey in Winnipeg, Manitoba, before coming to the University of Michigan.  A high-scoring forward under Coach Vic Heyliger, he was the third-highest all-time point scorer for Michigan at the end of his Michigan career.  A member of the first NCAA Championship team in 1948, he scored the winning goal against Boston College as well as picking up three goals and three assists in the 8-4 semifinal game against Dartmouth.

Selected as the team’s most valuable player in 1948, he was also a member of two All-American teams.  After graduation, Wally Gacek pursued a career in the oil industry in Alberta.
