Steve Halko played hockey for the Thornhill Thunderbirds before he enrolled at Michigan and played defense under Coach Red Berenson from 1993-1996. He won the Vic Heyliger Outstanding Defenseman Award three times, in 1994, 1995, and 1996. He was on three All-Great Lakes Invitational Tournament teams as a defenseman in 1993, 1994, and 1995. He was elected Captain for his senior year in 1996 and led his team to its first NCAA Championship in 32 years with a 3-2 victory over Colorado College in overtime.
He graduated in 1996 from the University of Michigan in 1996 and played for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League from 1997-2003. He also played in the American Hockey League for Springfield Falcons, Beast of New Haven, Worcester IceCats, and Lowell Lock Monsters. Steve Halko retired from hockey in 2003 and works as a financial advisor in Cary, North Carolina.
