John McKennell played minor hockey for the Toronto Marlboro Junior B team for three years and for the Junior A team for one year before enrolling at Michigan.  He played right wing on three consecutive NCAA Championship teams.  His career scoring record is fifty-four goals and forty-six assists.  He also scored five goals and two assists in NCAA Tournament competition.

He was selected to the Coaches All-American Team in 1951 and was selected as an All-American on the 1952 NCAA Tournament team.  He graduated from the School of Business Administration.  John McKennell coached for several years in minor league hockey and has served at the executive level with the Humber Valley Hockey Association of the Toronto area.
