John Matchefts, originally from Eveleth, Minnesota, played hockey at Eveleth High School for two years prior to his career at Michigan.  He played center for Michigan for three years and was elected captain of the 1953 team.  Nicknamed the “Fly”, he was selected to the 1951 and 1953 NCAA Tournament team and was an honorable mention All-American.  He was also the Most Valuable Player in the 1953 NCAA Tournament.  John Matchefts graduated from the University of Michigan School of Education.

After graduating from Michigan, he represented the United States in the 1956 Winter Olympics at Cortina d’Ampezzo, where he received a silver medal.  Later, he served as a high school ice hockey coach before becoming Head Coach at Colorado College, and later at the Air Force Academy.  John Matchefts passed away 10 November 2013.
