John Jewell played high school hockey for Sacred Heart High School in Laurium, Michigan. Joining several other players from the Calumet area, he played goal for Coach Ed Lowrey from 1933-1935. During his career, he was twenty-eight wins, twelve losses, four ties, and seven shutouts. In eighteen of his career games, he only allowed one goal. He played every minute of every game until late in his senior year when an operation forced him to miss a game. His college career goals against average was 1.84.
In the 1934-1935 season, John Jewell was elected co-captain with John Sherf. In the 1933-1934 season, he had fifty-nine saves in a 2-1 victory over Kitchener, for his most memorable game at Michigan.
