Jim Haas played minor hockey in Nipawin, Saskatchewan and Junior A hockey for Prince Albert and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan prior to enrolling at the University of Michigan.  Playing for Coach Vic Heyliger, he played two seasons on defense and one at forward for the Wolverines.  He totaled nineteen goals and thirty-six assists during his career.  He had numerous honors while playing for Michigan.

Michigan’s captain in 1953-1954, Jim Haas was twice named to the NCAA Championship team as an All-American in 1952 and 1954.  He was also a member of the NCAA All-Star Team in 1952 and 1954, and a 1954 of the All-League Team.  His most important goals are the two that he scored in the 1953 NCAA Championship victory over a favored Minnesota team.  After graduating from the School of Literature, Science, and the Arts with a degree in Geology, Jim Haas moved to Alberta, where he coached Bantam Hockey for several years.
