Don Canham

Oak Park, Illinois
Athletic Director: 1968-1988

Don Canham came to Ann Arbor in January 1938 where he lettered in track and field from 1939-1941.  During his time as a student at the University of Michigan, he served as the team’s captain in 1941 and won the NCAA Championship in the high jump in 1940.

Don Canham returned to Michigan in 1946 as the assistant coach of the track and field team.  He was promoted to head coach in 1948 and served in that position until 1968, when he became the university’s Athletic Director.  In this position, he set himself apart with his wide range of skills which allowed Michigan’s Athletic Department to become self-sustaining while raising the profile of all the athletic teams.  One of his biggest moves as Athletic Director was the hiring of Red Berenson as the Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach in 1984.

Don Canham retired from the University of Michigan in 1988.  He died 3 May 2005 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
